TV Presenter 1: And now it's time to meet our next guest, a singer/songwriter who began by studying classical music ...Kanon!!! Kanon made her record interview in 2004 after graduating in vocal music from the Conservatory of Queensland in Australia. She got her big break in 2007 when this number, Wings to Fly, was used in a popular Japanese TV drama. And here she is ... Kanon!!!

Kanon: Hello! Nice to meet you.

TV Presenter 1: So, Wings to Fly is your cover of a Japanese folk song that came out in 1971. So, how did it feel to have a hit with it?

Kanon: Well, I have to say that I was really, really happy at first. This song was used in this drama series called Chiri to Techin and when it got on the show I had messages from a lot of people saying "Who's singing this song??" and after I got on the show I had a lot of people recognising me for the artist who sang the song which was used in the drama so I really have to thank the director for using the music!

TV Presenter 2: So, you said you're trying to create a fusion of classical music and pop and you started out with a very formal education on the classical side so, what made you start there?

Kanon: To tell you my background first, I studied in Australia (High School & University) and when I decided to go the college in Australia I really wanted to learn music and because I had been learning vocal training since when I was 14 I really wanted to go into the vocal field but because I was learning theatrical music I really wanted to do like pop music and theatrical music but when I told it to my singing teacher she said it would be better if I learnt like the classical music first and then I can decide whichever direction I wanna go to and I totally agreed with that and I decided to go into the classical field and learn classical music first.

TV Presenter 2: So it's a nice balance for you to have both elements of classical and pop.

Kanon: Yes.

TV Presenter 1: So, can we ask you to sing something at the piano for us?

Kanon: Yes, I would love to.

TV Presenter 1: OK.

Kanon: Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it.

TV Presenter 1: So, Lingering Snow is a well-known Japanese folk number that came out in 1974. So what made you want to cover it?

Kanon: That's when I released Wings to Fly last year. I had messages from people saying that they wanted to hear other Japanese folk songs sung in English so I've always wanted to cover a Japanese song and I have always loved Lingering Snow and great songs say great in each new generation so I've always wanted to cover this piece.

Kanon: Bonjour! Enchantée de faire votre connaissance.

Présentatrice 1: Wings to Fly est une reprise d'une célèbre chanson populaire japonaise sortie en 1971. Comment avez-vous réagi face au succès de cette reprise?

Kanon: Et bien, je dois dire que j'étais très, très contente d'abord. Cette chanson a été utilisée dans (nom???) et lorsqu'elle est passée dans la série, beaucoup de gens m'ont envoyé des messages pour me demander "Mais qui donc chante cette chanson?" et lorsque je suis intervenue dans la série, de nombreuses personnes m'ont reconnu comme étant l'artiste qui interprétait la chanson utilisée dans la série. Il faut donc vraiment que je remercie le metteur en scène de s'être servi de ma musique!

Présentatrice 2: Vous dites que vous essayez de créer un mélange de musique classique et pop et vous avez commencé par recevoir une éducation musicale très formelle dans le domaine classique. Qu'est-ce qui vous a fait commencer par là ?

Kanon: Pour vous résumer d'abord mon parcours, j'ai fait mes études en Australie (lycée et université) et lorsque j'ai rejoint l'université, je voulais vraiment étudier la musique. Ayant fait du chant depuis l'âge de 14 ans, je souhaitais devenir chanteuse et puisque j'apprenais la musique théâtrale, je voulais faire de la pop. Mais lorsque j'en ai parlé à ma prof de chant, elle m'a dit que ce serait mieux d'apprendre la musique classique d'abord et qu'ensuite je pourrais choisir la direction qui me plairait. J'étais tout à fait d'accord avec elle et j'ai donc décidé de m'orienter d'abord vers le classique.

Présentatrice 2: C'est bien pour vous de combiner à la fois classique et pop.

Kanon: Oui.

Présentatrice 1: Pouvez-vous nous jouer quelque chose au piano?

Kanon: Oui. Avec plaisir.

Présentatrice 1: Lingering Snow est une célèbre chanson populaire japonaise qui date de 1974. Pourquoi vouliez-vous en faire une reprise?

Kanon: C'est quand j'ai sorti Wings to Fly l'année dernière. Des gens m'ont contactée pour me dire qu'ils voudraient entendre d'autres chansons populaires japonaises chantées en anglais. J'ai toujours voulu faire une reprise d'une chanson japonaise et j'ai toujours adoré Lingering Snow. Les grandes chansons traversent toutes les générations et j'ai toujours voulu faire une reprise de ce morceau.
